Revised Versions of Unit 5 Products

Above are the revised versions of my Unit 5 products, including photos of the T-shirt and badge designs physically printed onto a T-shirt and placed into badge cases. The corrections made were in accordance to the specific aspects of each product my focus group, as well as my client, felt could be improved or changed in order to make them more effective, professional-looking and appealing to the target audience.

I feel I have fulfilled the majority of suggestions made by both the focus group and my client, such as the incorporation of a blue banner conjoined with the NHS logo spread across the width of the page for both the poster and email outlet in order to make the white text stand out more and make the overall products look more professional and visually interesting, the incorporation of more visual elements in my magazine article such as the extra image and the harsh, bold coloured text on the right side of the page (where the focus group claimed something of the likes should be incorporated into it as it had merely been an empty, white space before the improvements were made) indicating where the reader can seek and receive help (I ensured that the College Nurse Team was evident in this information to confirm to students where they can seek help with any health-related query they may have), the deletion of the large, red quotation marks apparent in my original magazine article (in which I merely replaced them with quotation marks more suited to the rest of the article font), and the application of a red stroke line on the magazine cover title "Smashed" in order to make it stand out more.

However, I didn't incorporate specific suggestions for improvement such as the magazine cover puffs for my magazine cover, as I felt the page looked too crowded when I incorporated puffs into it, and also felt at the last minute whilst making the corrections that the amount of information and magazine content featured on the cover may be too overwhelming, daunting or tedious for the reader to have to observe whilst passing by, as well as the application of a design or pattern to the white canvas behind the magazine article title "My Drunken Rage", as likewise, I felt the incorporation of a design crowded the title, created a distraction from the title's initial emphasis, and looked tacky, including the fact that I didn't allow myself enough time to find a subtle yet effective design or Photoshop brushes that looked professional or effective enough to incorporate behind the title. But overall, I feel I've fulfilled a lot of the more vital suggestions for improvement which is evident between my original products and my revised products, and ultimately produced more effective, professional-looking products as a result of acquiring useful audience feedback as well as professional advice from my client.

Since completing and submitting all five Unit 5 products two weeks ago, I have conducted a focus group and started writing up my Evaluation E assessor/peer review for Unit 6. The focus group was conducted on Friday the 18th March with five peers and lasted approximately 20 minutes. In that interview, I presented each of my campaign products individually to the group and asked them questions related to the products, such as what they thought about the colour scheme of each product, what they thought of the slogan and title choices, what they thought about the layout/positioning of each element on each page, and how effective they felt the imagery was in delivering the campaign's message clearly and capturing the audience's attention.

As a result of conducting the interview, I received detailed constructive criticism, both positive and negative, on which elements of each product the group felt were effective and complimentary of the campaign's message, and which elements could be improved in order to meet the standards and requirements of the campaign's message. For example, I received complimentary comments regarding the magazine cover's text font, as well as positive feedback regarding the magazine article's layout and how "professional" it's presentation looked, but a peer in the group felt that the poster and email's message was not clear in what it's trying to convey through the imagery, and suggested ways in which the statistic information at the bottom of the page could be worded differently so that the imagery makes more sense to the audience.

Similarly, I received an assessor review from my teacher and gained a detailed insight into which elements of each product could be improved. For example, adjusting the brightness/contrast of various imagery to make them clearer, as when printed, they were darker than they were supposed to be and as a result weren't as clear as I'd intended for them to be and looked too "black". Therefore I plan on making these corrections and acting upon the criticism I have received from my peers as well as my assessor in order to produce more professional-looking products that serve the purpose of engaging the audience well and conveying the message more successfully and effective stylistically.     

For the remainder of the week, I intend to complete my assessor/peer review for Unit 6 in lessons and free periods, which I started earlier today. For this review, I am required to write up about the feedback I received from the group, which involves including quotes to show the detailed criticism my products received, as well as discuss ways in which the group felt the products could be improved/what I intend to edit or re-do. In Monday and Tuesday's lessons, we are required to write up Evaluation C in exam conditions which refers to the relation between the products we made for Unit 5 and past and current professional work, therefore I plan on working on the review until Wednesday or Thursday, and hand it as soon as possible so it's completed by the time we are required to write up Evaluation E in the lessons on Monday and Tuesday.

Last week, I was required to finish creating my magazine article and start work on the email outlet of the campaign, as well as iron the T-shirt design onto a T-shirt and fit the badge designs into three bade cases. I worked on my magazine article during the free periods I had on Monday and continued working on it through to Wednesday in free periods and in lesson, to which point I had just about finished it. I then decided to move on to creating my email outlet for the campaign as I only had two more days to hand the entire campaign in for marking and started to feel pressured to get everything completed and handed in as a result, therefore I worked a solid hour or two on it to get it to the standard I wanted it at and looking the way I intended it to look in my treatment.

Fortunately, it only took me an hour to two hours to create the entire email outlet as my confidence and ability to navigate around Photoshop and find the appropriate tools needed for the product had immensely improved over the last few weeks due to the experimentation and practice I carried out on other campaign products and my own graphics (as discussed in previous blogs).

Regarding the T-shirt and badge elements of my campaign, I printed three small images of my badge design and placed them into three badge cases I purchased from the art shop in Richmond, which were completed on the Thursday night and ready to hand in the next day. Regarding the T-shirt design, I took the T-shirt design and a plain white T-shirt to "Jack's" printing shop in Darlington to get the design professionally ironed onto the shirt in order for the outcome to look as professional and effective as possible, as when I tried to iron the design onto a T-shirt myself, it ended up looking unprofessional and tacky and started to peel, therefore I felt it would be better to get it printed elsewhere. However, the earliest the printing process would be completed and ready to take away is today (Monday), therefore I intend to pick it up from the shop during today's lunch break and present it to the focus group I'm going to conduct in Wednesday's lesson.

Regardless, I uploaded the T-shirt and badge design onto Moodle with the three other campaign products as I felt it would be necessary to do so in order for the examiner to physically see both designs as well as their physical form on the T-shirt and badges. Here is a screen dump of the finished badges.


On Friday the 11th March, we were required to hand in all our completed campaign products by the end of the lesson at 16:10pm. Although I felt pressured in that I decided to make further finishing touches to my magazine article in the lesson in order to get each element of the article to the standard I wanted it at, e.g. I felt the the positioning of the text and the title, as well as the quotes extracted from the article itself and the colour/stroke of each quote and finding a background design to be placed behind the quotes using the text wrap tool (in the end I used an image of blood drops from Google to place behind each quote), needed to be altered slightly, I managed to upload all five of my completed products onto Moodle by the end of the lesson for marking, therefore I feel satisfied with the fact that I was successful in getting the products finished and handed in to the standard I wanted them at and everything ran smoothly and according to plan. These are my products in their completed form.

For the remainder of the week, we are required to conduct focus groups with several peers in the class in order to gain constructive criticism, both positive and negative, regarding the campaign to determine how effective it is in terms of appealing to the target audience of teenagers aged 16-19, and ways in which the products could be improved, which may result in slight alterations such as a different colour scheme, a different font, alternate positioning of text, brightness/contrast of imagery, or may even result in the creation of an entirely new product altogether or another photoshoot. As a result of the focus group, I hope to gain useful feedback regarding factors such as the ones mentioned, e.g. different colour schemes, different font, alteration of the brightness/shadows of the imagery etc, to aid me in making my campaign or a particular product even more effective than it already may be.

According to my scheduling document, the work I was required to finish this week was making finishing touches to my completed products. However, as discussed in previous blogs, I'm a week behind schedule, although the only outstanding work I have to complete is finishing creating my magazine article, ironing the finished T-shirt and badge designs onto T-shirts and badges, and creating my email outlet for the campaign, which I intend to work on during lessons, in free periods and after college throughout the next few days to get them finished, therefore I'm not too far behind. This is what I've completed so far regarding the magazine article.

The deadline for handing in all completed projects is Friday the 11th, so I feel confident that I'll have all my products completed by then, particularly as everything ran smoothly this week and it's taken me less time to create some of the outlets such as the magazine cover and article than I thought it would. I expected the creation process, particularly for the magazine cover and article, to take at least three or four weeks due to the fact that I was extremely rusty when it came to navigating around Photoshop a couple of weeks ago for the first time in months.  

I feel the reason for my products taking less time to create than I thought they would is because I downloaded Photoshop onto my computer at home and was able to navigate around it and get myself re-familiarised with its tools and resources, which ultimately made the creation process of my products quicker and more efficient as I knew which tools to use in order to make each aspect of the product look more professional and effective (such as the de-saturation tool, the blending options tool to adjust the colours/shadow of the image and text etc.) and where they were. I also created graphics on Photoshop for my own personal use to get myself even more familiar and confident with the tools and resources for the campaign outlets, therefore I feel this has also been a major contributing factor to the quicker and more efficient completion of my products.

Similarly, through the continuous use of adjusting the shadows and saturation/altering the brightness and contrast to create a darker, edgier look on the graphics and campaign outlets, as well as gaining skills regarding suitable, effective fonts, the text positioning, the font effects in the 'blending options' tool etc, I definitely feel I've improved in using the tools provided on the program and can use them to a fuller extent than I would have if I didn't experiment with graphics and pictures or didn't possess Photoshop on my home computer.

This is an example of the graphics I created in my free time to help improve my skills and confidence in using Photoshop in order to produce better overall campaign outlets. By creating graphics such as these and experimenting with several layers in terms of their colour, shadowing, brightness/contrast, and transparency, as well as cutting out several complicated images with the polygonal lasso tool, I feel I've also become more confident is using this particular tool as cutting out imagery has always been something I've struggled with due to the fact I don't tend to have a steady hand when it comes to doing intricate things like that, therefore it's been an extremely beneficial process.


      
So far, I've finished creating my magazine cover, poster and T-shirt/badge design. I completed the magazine cover and T-shirt/badge design almost a week ago now, and made finishing touches to the poster two days ago. Below are the finished products, although I may decide to make further finishing touches or slight alterations to them at some point during the week. These are screen dumps of what I've completed so far.

Project Management and Monitoring Production

According to my scheduling document, the work I'm supposed to be doing over the next week is fitting the badge designs into two or three badge cases, and ironing the T-shirt design onto a T-shirt. However, I'm currently working on my magazine cover design on Photoshop and am cutting out images required for the campaign outlets out. I recently installed Photoshop this week and have completed work on my poster during the break, as well as started working on my magazine cover and completing essays and research deadlines for other subjects. I intend to dedicate the next week in lesson, during free periods and after college to getting my magazine cover and article completed as well as my email outlet and T-shirt/badge design and will also continue to work on them over the weekend. 

Before starting work on the campaign, I spent an hour or two getting to grips with Photoshop again as I haven't used it in several months, so although it was challenging to get my head around certain elements of the program, I'm beginning to find my way around it efficiently, and as a result have completed some campaign work, therefore everything ran smoothly in the end. This is how far I am in completing my magazine cover and poster.


As a result of creating these campaign outlets, I feel more confident in using Photoshop and have discovered how to apply certain tools to particular aspects of the product in order to make them stand out more, e.g. altering the hue/saturation/brightness and contrast of the images (for example, I altered the saturation and brightness/contrast of the poster imagery to give it a darker, moodier feel), applying strokes to fatten up the text, colour overlays, gradient overlays, applying texture, drop shadows and inner/outer glows etc, as well as the process of downloading effective fonts and brushes of a high quality that cater to the needs of my specific campaign design, which will ultimately be a huge factor in how effective and professional my campaign will turn out to be as the more knowledge I possess regarding how to find my way around Photoshop, the more I will be able to determine which tools are best for producing my products to a high standard.

Regarding my magazine cover however, the styles of fonts and the colours I have used for the sell-lines don't fully mirror my treatment due to the fact that when I applied the yellows, greens and purples to the text, it looked tacky and unprofessional, and also didn't reflect a limited colour palette but a range of colours, which wasn't originally what I'd planned to have, therefore I experimented with black and red in conjunction with the tools in the 'blending options' such as strokes, drop shadows and inner/outer glows, to determine what colours look better-suited to the overall harsh, edgy theme I planned for the text in the first place. It turns out the harsh "Trashed" font I downloaded and the colours I used for the magazine title were also most effective for the sell-lines and advertisements.

In addition, having physically typed the original magazine title "Drunk Weekly" in the "Trashed" font as well as used harsh, bold colours on the magazine cover, I felt that the title "Smashed" looked more in-your-face and hard-hitting as a title in general, especially as it's a more unique title than "Drunk Weekly" in that the name "[insert] weekly" is used for a range of different magazines. I particularly felt that "Smashed" was a more effective title to use as it suits the calibre of the magazine more, is a modern slang word for "drunk" amongst teenagers, has a cool, "young" feel to it, and compliments the edgy, scattered brushes I applied behind it as it gives it more of a "smashed", broken, dangerous feel than the original title did.

In terms of what I feel I need to do to my current completed products in order to make them better are experimenting with different positions on the page of the poster title "Still dying for a drink?" as it doesn't stand out as much as I'd like it to, and also apply a white stroke on the advert information at the bottom of the page in order to make that stand out more as well. I also intend to spend the rest of the day determining how to make the imagery for the magazine cover compliment the sell-lines and text around it in order to make it the most effective it can be, as well as determining what positioning on the page looks best for the imagery.

Overall, I'm not as worried about the state of my work or the amount of time I have left to complete the campaign and hand it in to the extent I was a few weeks ago before the shoot as I feel I will able to complete all my products by the deadline next week, particularly if I dedicate all the lessons, my free periods and my free time at home to working on and defining them all as much as possible.

 According to my scheduling document, the work I was required to complete this week was to continue working on my magazine article on InDesign and start creating the design for the T-shirts and badges on Photoshop beginning Wednesday the 23rd February. However, as discussed in previous blogs, I'm slightly behind on schedule as I was not able to book my photoshoot until Thursday the 17th February.

During last Thursday's third period and lunch break, I carried out each photoshoot required for my campaign elements, and am currently cropping around the images in preparation for the creation of the campaign outlets, as well as completing essay work and practice exam questions for other subjects. Each shoot went smoothly and only took up to fifteen minutes each to carry out. I took several shots during each shoot to ensure that I have enough to sift through in order to determine which photos are the best quality to incorporate into my campaign. As a result of adjusting specific settings on the camera, as well as the focus dial and different zoom distances, in order to create the effect I wanted for each photoshoot, I became more confident in using the camera as each photoshoot took place and was reminded of how to use the camera to its fullest extent to create the most effective imagery possible.

However, I can't actually begin creating the campaign outlets until later on in the week as I am awaiting an email from Adobe to come through confirming my Photoshop registration so I can use Photoshop at home. Here are some of the photos taken during my photoshoot on Thursday.              


                              

The photos for the poster outlet of the campaign were taken from a mid to long shot to allow the audience to know exactly what's going on in the advertisement and to 'open' the picture up for them, which I feel will hit them harder as they're getting a full insight into the possibilities of excessive drinking, i.e. a drunken hit and run can happen anywhere at anytime, even in a familiar place such as college (hence why the shoot was carried out on the road outside the college; to create a sense of familiarity and enable the audience to relate to the location), especially if alcohol abuse is involved. The fact that the model is the victim in the situation, as well as the fact he's young (which implies he's a student in the college) is even more hard-hitting than if he were the one who'd been drinking excessively and landed himself in trouble as it indicates anyone can be a victim of drunk driving, even students of the college.

Likewise, I applied dark mark-up to the model's face to make it look bruised and as if he'd suffered a trauma of some kind; in this case a hit and run incident. The fact that his eyes are open places emphasis on the imagery's shock-factor and the advert's concept. The slogan "Still dying for a drink" will be present to enable the audience to understand what the advert is about, as well as almost asking the audience "are you still dying for a drink after seeing this?". A sentence referring to the number of drunken "hit and run" statistics will be positioned in the bottom left hand corner to place more emphasis and 'shock-factor' on the advert.

I feel the first shot is effective as it's not too dark nor too bright, therefore it'll be easier on the eye. Regarding the alignment and positioning of the imagery, the distance the shot was taken at has fortunately resulted in the model being centred directly in the middle of the page, which allows enough space for the NHS contact details and drink driving statistic information I intend to incorporate into the advert. Due to these factors, I plan on using this particular image for the poster outlet.

I feel the second shot however, is too bright, purely because of the angle and distance it was taken at in conjunction with the sunlight. There are also bags in the background of the imagery, which looks unprofessional. A rule of thirds isn't present in the image either, whereas in the first shot the imagery can be evenly split up into thirds, which could cause some problems in terms of the positioning of the text I plan on incorporating into the advert. Therefore that particular image wouldn't be an effective one to use for the final product.

Although I don't plan on making drastic changes to the poster outlet as I want it to mirror my treatment document as accurately as possible, I didn't originally plan on incorporating statistic information into the advert as I felt any amount of text would put the audience off. However, I now feel that including a sentence or two of hard-hitting statistic information would be effective as it will inform the audience of the shocking statistics surrounding issues related to binge drinking, but at the same time it won't take anything away rrom the slogan or imagery as it'll be very brief and straight to the point to emphasise its hard-hitting feel.       




Here are another few examples of the shoots I carried out last Thursday. This particular shoot is intended for the campaign's magazine article. I conducted this shoot at a mid-range distance to capture clear clarity of her facial expressions and give it a somewhat personal feel. I also determined through experimenting with different angles and range shots that this particular range was the most appropriate for the magazine article as that length of shot is a generic shooting distance in many establishes magazine article images.

The first two shots are likely candidates for the campaign as the model is perfectly centred in the middle of the photo and her body language in conjunction with her facial expressions are appropriate in the way that they convey feelings of despair and depression, as well as make her appear alone and helpless. Her body language and the way her arms are tightly folded suggests she's trapped in this despair, and the fact she she's got her head lowered and appears timid and quiet indicates that she feels as though she has no one to turn to, which I felt was an effective feel to give off through the body language as it gives off the impression binge drinking can have devastating consequences on your life that are beyond full emotional repair.

Although the third example I've provided could compete as a candidate for the article imagery, her facial expression looks slightly too vague and gormless in comparison to the other examples provided, as well as the fact that it appears as though her eyes are focusing on a particular object, which I felt detracted slightly from the image as the model's eyes were supposed to look vague and dazed as if they were staring into nothing. Therefore, the likeliest photo I'll use for the magazine article is the first example provided as I feel her body language portrays that of a professional magazine article photo and her eyes and vacant facial expression convey the impression that she feels alone and ashamed with no one to turn to. 

                            




This particular shoot is intended for my T-shirt and badge designs, which serve the purpose of acting as promotional tools for the campaign. Regarding the angle the shots were taken at, I felt that placing the glass on the floor and hovering over it to take the photo would enable the glass to be captured in its entirety and so that you can actually see into the glass. Likewise, I shot the imagery from a distance that enables you to see the entire glass and absorb it as a whole entity as opposed to just capturing the base of the glass. 

The first example I've provided is a likely candidate to be used for the actual design as it's bright, which gives it clarity, as opposed to the example below it which was taken before I adjusted the settings on the camera and the lighting equipment therefore is too dark for use. I feel the first example will ultimately look the most effective and clearest when dropped out of its background on Photoshop, therefore it's definitely one of the more likely candidates for the design.




This particular photoshoot was conducted for the magazine cover of my campaign. I conducted this shoot from a long-distance range in order to capture the model in her entirety so that it's clear what's actually happening in the imagery in relation to the message the magazine cover is going to convey once it's created. I determined through experimenting with different angles and range shots that this particular range was the most appropriate for the magazine cover for the mentioned reasons.

Regarding the model's body language, facial expression and her positioning next to the toilet basin employed within the images, they all convey the impression she’s depressed and ashamed of the state she’s in and feels too subdued and ill to hold her head up and look at the camera, which is a suitable convention for the genre of advertising I intended for my campaign to portray (social advertising).

It also creates the impression that we're merely ‘looking in’ on a teenage girl’s everyday life (which mostly likely resembles a vast majority of teenage girls across the country that drink too much on nights out), particularly as her back is turned to the camera and her body language gives off the impression she’s ‘unaware’ she’s being observed.

The first example provided could be a likely candidate to incorporate into the final product as it's not too dark or too bright (although the brightness and contrast may require slight adjustment in Photoshop to give it more clarity) and it portrays the model in her entirety without the obstruction of obstacles around her such as the wall on the left hand side that seems to be an obstruction in various other examples. It also employs a clear view of her facial expression as her head is turned slightly more to the left than it is in other shots, which places emphasis on the overall feel and message the imagery is trying to convey as it's apparent she's pained.

The second example could also be incorporated into the final product as it portrays that same negative feel conveyed through the model's body language and positioning against the toilet basin. It also doesn't consist of any obstructions such as the wall on the left side or the bin beside the toilet and showcases the model in her entirety. However, her facial expression isn't as apparent in this particular image as her facial features aren't showcased, which I feel detracts from the emphasis I intended to place on the imagery with her facial expressions to give it a more real, personalized feel. Therefore, I may not use this particular example for this reason.


Similarly, I feel the third example I've provided isn't appropriate to be incorporated into the final product as it's too bright, which takes the clarity away from the image and detracts from the dark, negative feel it's supposed to have as a product of social advertising. There is also the obstruction of the wall on the left hand side of the photo that hides a section of the imagery, which gives it a tacky, unprofessional feel. Therefore, realistically the first example provided will most likely be the image I incorporate into my magazine cover for the reasons mentioned.       




Finally, this particular photoshoot is intended for the viral advertisement (email) element of my campaign. I conducted this shoot from a mid-range shot to ensure that I captured enough of the model and the surrounding location in order to give it clarity and make it clear to the audience where it is, i.e. at Stanhope Park outside college to enable the audience to relate to the location, and what's actually happening within the imagery. I experimented with different angle shots in order to capture as many shots as possible to determine which shots are the most effective to use for the final product.  

Regarding the model's body language and positioning, I intended for him to have his back turned towards the camera as opposed to having him upright and facing the camera as I feel this particular positioning conveys feelings of sadness, despair and loss, in conjunction with the fact that the flowers evident in the imagery are not only designed to evoke consideration of the issue of drink driving within the audience, but to evoke empathy from them as well, whether that be sympathy for the driver who's lost his/her life, or shame as the driver was killed as a result of drunk driving.

This particular portrayal of the model and the overall feel of the advert also places emphasis on the melancholy, negative feel of the advert, and the fact he has his back turned towards the camera and gives him a somewhat "hidden" identity and provides him with a neutral feel. It creates the impression we're merely 'looking in' on an average teenager's life, a life that is common amongst many teenagers in the UK, which I intended to convey to the audience that a situation as tragic as that can happen to anyone at anytime in any place (even somewhere familiar like college to an everyday student).   

The first example I've provided, although somewhat bright as a result of the sunlight pouring down on the location, could be a possible candidate to use for the email outlet as I feel his body language and positioning in that specific image gives off a professional sort of feel and keeps his identity hidden due to the fact his back is turned towards the camera, again as if we're merely 'looking in' on the situation. I feel the specific angle I've taken the shot at is complimentary of the overall imagery as it consists of a perfect space I can effectively incorporate the slogan into on the left side of the model without it looking tacky or out of place, as well as a good space at the bottom of the image for the statistic information where there won't be the issue of it blending with any dark colours in the imagery itself.

Although the second example I've provided is also fairly ambiguous in that not too much is revealed about the model's face or identity in order to create a more fly-on-the-wall sort of impression, I feel that the specific angle it's taken at doesn't leave much scope for effective positioning of the slogan or text. The only effective space I could incorporate the slogan into is the right side of the model, which would result in the text blending in with the dark colours in the imagery, particularly the black lamppost. Therefore, despite its positive factors and the fact that the imagery is neither too dark nor too bright and even consists of better lighting than the first example in some ways due to the fact it's more neutral and de-saturated lighting, I feel that effective text placement would be an issue if I was to incorporate the image into the final product.

Likewise, the third example I've provided employs the same difficulties due to the fact it was shot at the same angle the second example was. However, another factor that detracts me from considering incorporating it into the final product is the fact that the model's face is slightly more apparent in the image, and although this particular concept doesn't drastically detract from the feel I intended to convey to the audience, his facial expression appears to be somewhat 'blank' and emotionless and as though he's merely 'acting' and isn't conveying any real impression through any factor of his presence that the situation has affected him, unlike the hunched over, ambiguous feel he conveys in various other examples. I also feel that the fact his eyes are widened and apparent in the imagery detracts from the professional feel of the advert.

Therefore, as a result of evaluating the pros and cons of the provided examples, the likeliest image to be incorporated into the final product is the first example, as although it may have been more effective if the sun wasn't shining during the take, I feel the angle it's taken at gives the advert a professional feel and provides it with more scope to experiment with text placement and the positioning of the slogan.

Project Management and Monitoring Production

According to my scheduling document, the work I was required to do this week was the continuation and finishing of the campaign's article on Photoshop in terms of editing the colours of the text, title and imagery to give them more of a similar, professional vibe, as well as the creation of the magazine cover including the de-saturation and editing process of the imagery. However, as I couldn't book my photoshoot for this particular imagery until the lunch break on the 17th February (as discussed in my previous blog on the 7th February), I haven't been able to capture any imagery to start properly working on and editing any of the campaign outlets.

Instead, I have been researching into layout aspects of teen magazines such as "Sugar" and "Seventeen" regarding the masthead, the main sell line, the sub-heading, the positioning of the imagery, and effective colour palettes in order to give me a deeper insight into what exactly gives a magazine cover a more effective, professional look, and how to position specific aspects of the magazine such as the sell-lines, the masthead, specific colour palettes, and the imagery to give it maximum impact that will evoke a response from the audience and lure them into buying it. This is an example of the calibre of magazines I have been researching, especially as the layout of this particular example resembles what my magazine cover will look like once it's finished (minus the colour palette).


Alongside carrying out this research regarding magazine cover layouts, I have also been making corrections to unit 4 work that has been outstanding for a month or two to save myself time in the future when I'll be busy creating my campaign outlets. This took place during Tuesday's and Friday's lessons, as well as the research into magazine cover layouts. I also stuck unit 4 and 5 work into my sketchbook that had yet to be stuck in on the Friday's lesson. However, as I was on an English Language trip to the British Library in London from 7:30am to 6:30pm on the Wednesday, I was unable to complete any work in that lesson.

Overall, although I am up-to-date with all my work so far, I feel slightly under pressure due to the fact my photoshoot is booked as late as the 17th February. I feel as though I'll be short of time nearing the deadline, particularly as I still have my article to write, therefore I will dedicate my free periods and the lesson on Friday to writing the article, and any other spare time I have after that in terms of free periods will be dedicated to creating each campaign outlet in terms of the imagery de-saturation and editing, as well as the specific text and title fonts and positioning of each, in the order apparent in the scheduling document.

Despite the fact that I intended to start creating the basic elements of each campaign outlet this week (but couldn’t properly get around to it due to demanding English Language coursework deadlines and Religious Studies essay deadlines), I intend to make up for that this week, especially after each photoshoot has been carried out and I can properly start work on them. As the email element, T-shirt/badge design and the poster are extremely image-oriented, they will only require a few free periods to complete.

However, as the magazine cover and article will be more time-consuming to complete due to the harsh fonts required for both, the surrounding text on the magazine cover which requires different fonts and colours, as well as the de-saturation, cutting out and positioning of the imagery for each, I plan on dedicating the most time into them to ensure they’re completed to the standard they need to be at to gain the highest marks possible.

Project Management and Monitoring Production

According to my scheduling document, the work I was required to finish this week was conducting each photoshoot for the campaign (which was supposed to be done throughout the day on the 4th February) and starting to de-saturate/edit the imagery for the email element for the campaign (which was supposed to be started on the weekend). However, when I went to book the photoshoot on the 1st February each slot was fully booked up to the 17th February during the lunch break, so that was the earliest I could book the shoot, which ultimately means that all my outdoor risk assessment and photoshoot planning documents state that the shooting date will be on the 4th February, even though that's now not the case. I intend to carry out both shoots for my magazine article and magazine cover imagery (as well as the imagery for the campaign's T-shirts and badges) during that lunch break, and also plan on shooting my external shoots for my email and poster imagery on Tuesday the 15th February during the third free period at 11:50pm and the lunch break, which won't require any lighting equipment. In order to save time whilst waiting for each shoot, I plan on creating the design and fonts for each campaign element and then paste the edited pictures into them after they're taken.   

The reason for having to rearrange the date I intended to conduct the photoshoot on was that the photoshoot couldn't be booked until all outdoor risk assessment work was completed and uploaded to the blog, and as my Recces and Outdoor Risk Assessment documents weren't finished and uploaded until the 1st February, all the earlier slots for photoshoots had been completely booked up. I also took pictures of my location shoots for reference material for my Recces document and got my models to complete their release forms for the shoot the week before last according to the schedule, but didn't blog about that work last Monday when I was required to as I was pre-occupied in the lesson with trying to finish off other outstanding work such as my outdoor risk assessment documents, therefore my progress regarding that work wasn't monitored when it was supposed to have been.

Although I have successfully uploaded all of the outdoor risk assessment documents, I didn't complete my Recces, Outdoor Risk Assessment and Photoshoot Planning documents on the week beginning the 19th January when I was required to, which meant that they were uploaded to the blog on a later date than planned, which put me slightly behind schedule. However, all Outdoor Risk Assessment work was eventually completed and uploaded to the blog.

The Outdoor Risk Assessment work I was required to do has helped me in the way that it's given me a deeper insight into all the responsibilities and potential hazards that could surface when conducting a photoshoot, and has also given me a better indication of what procedures I must take if any harm was to come to anyone involved in the photoshoot, which evidently has provided me with more confidence to conduct the shoot.
